Collection Summary
Collection Title
Gloucester Choral Society
The Gloucestershire Choral Society formed in 1845, regularly performing concerts of religious and secular music with the support of a full orchestra. In 1856 the society disbanded due to a falling membership but reformed in 1861 following a public meeting where it was decided to establish a permanent choral society which would give performances for a minimal charge. Four concerts were held each session at Shire Hall, which proved to be a popular venue. When the Shire Hall was taken over for war purposes in 1940, recitals were then held in Gloucester Cathedral. The society celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1995. The first minute book and other early documents of the society form part of the Gloucestershire Collection, held at Gloucester Library. The collection comprises Minutes 1885-1984; score of J Sanders 'Gloucestershire Visions' 1995
