Collection Summary
Collection Title
Lamond Collection
Frederic Lamond (1868-1948) achieved an international reputation as an outstanding concert pianist, especially as an interpreter of Beethoven. Born in Glasgow, he was particularly highly thought of in Germany where he lived for many years. He returned to his native Scotland shortly before the outbreak of World War II and died in Stirling. This small collection of his musical compositions all date from around the last decade of the 19th century. It comprises an opera, two overtures, a symphony and a few instrumental and chamber music works, all in manuscript, and there is in addition a published score of one of Lamond's overtures and the symphony. There are also programmes and reviews of Lamond's concerts, photographs and drawings, a number of letters to him including one from the composer Tchaikovsky and one from Franz Liszt, letters relating to the honorary doctorate conferred on him by the University of Glasgow in 1937 and some correspondence between Lamond's widow and Henry Farmer, through whom Glasgow University Library acquired the collection. The arrangement of this material reflects the original order in which it was received. The collection will primarily be of interest to researchers.

Collections Overview
Glasgow University Library has been in existence for over 500 years and as such holds a number of important special music collections. The majority of the collections relate to Scottish composers and musicians or musicians associated with Scotland, e.g. Sir John Blackwood McEwen and Hamish MacCunn. The collections include important historical material, in particular the material held in the Euing Collection, which includes manuscripts of two medieval liturgical works, an early 17th century lute book, a set of part-books belonging to the publisher John Playford, and biographical documents and letters sent to John Sainsbury for use in his Dictionary of musicians which appeared in 1824.
The general music collection includes books, scores and AV material.
