Collections Overview
The Collections comprise a comprehensive collection of books, scores, periodicals and sound recordings, covering the whole range of the music of Europe and the Americas, with small but well-used sections on ethnomusicology and the music of Africa, Asia and Australasia. The Collections are very strong in foreign material, particularly books published in the Americas and Europe (especially Germany, France and Italy. The Collections include many 18th and 19th century books and scores. They hold some 59,000+ titles (including scores) and some 360 periodicals, of which approximately 170 are current titles. In recent years the emphasis has been on building up the reference collections, both scores and monographs. The scores collection is strong in collected editions and historical sets. Thematic catalogues, bibliographies, dictionaries and other reference works are acquired as comprehensively as possible. The Music Collection includes a number of named special collections. The most important of these are the Littleton Collection; the Tudor Church Music Collection; the Elvey Collection; the Library of the Plainsong and Medieval Music Society; and the George Collection of Piano Music
