Collection name King's Sound Archive
Unique identifier
Description Recorded music, both classical and popular, issued on 78rpm discs between c.1925 and 1960. Approx. 150,000 discs, representing all major labels and many smaller companies, mainly originating in the UK, but some in France, Germany, Italy, and the USA. The collection is intended to support research into the history of recorded music, including research requiring physical access to the discs. It may also be used as a source for historical performances of music.

Collections Overview The Maughan Library and Information Services Centre holds a collection of Western art music for undergraduate and postgraduate study and research concentrating on musicology, biography and history ranging from early medieval music to 20th century. The collection includes the Library of Thurston Dart, a former Head of Department. The Library holds the complete works of some canonic composers and various music series such as 'Recent researches…' and 'The symphony'. The Multimedia area also houses LPs, CDs, DVDs, videos and audiocassettes with other A/V materials and listening and viewing equipment. These include MMus theses 1967, King's PhD theses on Music and a selection of PhD theses from other countries on microfilm.There is a collection of music scores on microfilm - some from manuscripts. There is a wide selection of electronic resources, some multidisciplinary and some specifically on music. Databases and ejournals are available only to registered users.The King's Sound Archive is a collection of 78 rpm records donated to King's College London by the BBC. A number of separate special collections of older or rare material are housed in the Foyle Special Collections Library. These include the Carnegie Collection of British Music, the Rare Books Collection and the the Rainbow Collection.
